It is believed that Lord Shiva had almost established his kedara (throat) here to form a new shrine, but due to some divine interruption or disturbance, he left the place and moved to Kedarnath, where the famous temple stands today. The name “Kedarkantha” translates to “Throat of Lord Shiva” — Kedar meaning Shiva and Kantha meaning throat.
